On Wednesday, July 28^th site sponsor and good friend of NJ Saltwater Fisherman, Captain Rich Wilkowski, piloted his new 43’ boat “Jersey Hooker” down to Long Beach Island to participate in the Beach Haven Marlin & Tuna Club 41^st Annual White Marlin Invitational Tournament (BHWMIT). By Saturday night, he and his four man crew would be over $70,000 richer! Here’s how it happened.

The rules of the BHWMIT are fairly simple. It is a trolling only tournament. No live bait or chumming is allowed. The boat must choose one non-fishing day out of the three days of the tournament. Each boat may weigh in up to 3 tuna, 3 white marlin, 1 blue marlin, 1 dolphin and 1 wahoo per day. The heaviest single fish of the tournament wins.

After considering the weather reports, Capt. Rich chose to use their non-fishing day on Thursday. Their first day to fish was Friday. They shoved off from Morrison‘s Marina at 2:30am and they took their time heading out to the canyon. “It was sporty on the ride out,” explained the captain. “The weather report said it was going to lay down. Boy! Were they wrong! It was solid 4-7 foot seas with white caps all day and an occasional 10 footer.”

Once offshore, the captain studied his sea surface temperature charts and decided to set course for the 82 degree water east of Lindenkohl Canyon. At 8:00am, upon arriving at their blue water destination just inshore of the break line, the tournament committee boat called, “Lines in.” First Mate Captain George Paley put out the Jersey Hooker’s favorite marlin lures, which included a couple of Tuna Busters from Carolina Lure Company, which Capt. Rich described as “infamous”.

Rich recounted the ensuing action. “Just as Big T (crew member Tom Wortmann) was letting out the outside rigger on the starboard side, a 56 pound yellow fin crashes the bait. The crew quickly landed him and got the spread back out. We had a white (marlin) window shopping, but it didn’t take the bait.” The trolling over the next few hours produced nothing. Then Capt. Rich noticed a slick out on the 1000 foot line and decided to work the area. That’s when it happened. “I looked toward the stern and here comes Mr. White,” explained the captain with a smile. The marlin took the bait and the controlled chaos of the experienced offshore crew began. Shouts of “Marlin! Marlin! Marlin!” were heard around the boat as Capt. George took the rod and the crew scrambled to clear the other lines. “The white freight trained a 50W (fishing reel) and just kept peeling line off. The crew was a little worried because all they saw was the bill and a shadow. They thought it might have been a small blue (marlin). But, after about fifteen minutes they got color. We realized that this could be a potential money fish.”

The fish was eventually brought on board and was measured three times. They confirmed the measurement of 69 inches and put the big marlin in the fish box. They trolled for a while longer and raised another window shopper, but couldn’t get it to bite. At 3:00pm they headed for the scale. It weighed 59.9 pounds. The Jersey Hooker would be the only boat to weigh in a white marlin on Friday.

On day two it was decided that they would fish Toms Canyon. However, heavy boat traffic persuaded Capt. Rich to change those plans. He opted instead to fish the 1000 line of the Carteret and troll south to where they had caught fish the previous day. One more looker and one small white marlin was caught and released. A few more hours went by without a touch. They then raised a huge white marlin. “It was a monster white! It was all lit up and thrashing the baits in the spread,” explained Capt. Rich. The fish was hooked but spit the hook quickly. Before packing it in for the day, they brought a hefty 20 pound mahi to the gaff. On the ride home the crew knew they had a good shot to place in the money. Reports of three other whites boated (including two in the last 20 minutes of the competition) had the crew on edge in nervous anticipation. “It was a nerve wracking three and a half hour boat ride back in,” laughed Capt. Rich.

At the dinner prior to the awards ceremony, the crew learned from friend Bill Carroll that they had taken second place overall and split the third place with the boat “Last Call” which had won for heaviest marlin on Saturday. The crew and their families waited anxiously for the awards ceremony to start.. Capt. Rich described their excitement. “When we got called up for our second place trophy, we were all super excited! And after all the other contestants received their trophies, it was time for the fun part - the money!” The checks were awarded from smallest to largest. “Four The Boys” $1000, “Hot Shot” $1000, “ Bone Voyage” $7750, “Pez Machine” $16,412.50. It was at this point the captain felt like something was wrong. “I thought, Wait a minute! We haven’t been called yet. There’s no way we won more than 16K!” But the checks kept coming, and so far, no mention of the “Jersey Hooker”. “Hard Four” $24,043, “Jersey Cape” (the overall winners) $29,950.

“Then the committee lifts up this check that reads, ‘Jersey Hooker’ with the amount of $70,728.75!” The crew had won almost three times the amount of the winning boat partially because several boats had not been entered into the Calcutta. Said Capt. Rich, “I express no disrespect to the other boats. But, after being presented with that huge, fake check made out for over $70,000, the rest of the night was a blur! I just want to say thanks to the Beach Haven Marlin and Tuna Club and all of the boats and people who participated in this amazing event!”

Jersey Hooker Charters gained first place with a white marlin in the Beach Haven Marlin and Tuna Club White Marlin Invitational on Friday, the tournament’s first fishable day, an e-mail from the boat said. The fish was knocked out of first by one other white on Saturday, but the crew won all the Calcuttas for the first day and the Calcutta for heaviest white in the event. After all boats sat out fishing on Thursday, the first day of the tournament, because of seas, the crew with Jersey Hooker – Capt. Rich Wilkowski, mate George Paley, Tom “Big-T” Wortmann, Kenny Burnes and “Mean” Dean Holonics – set out for the canyons on Friday for the tournament. They arrived at the grounds, meeting a 4- to 7-foot chop and occasional 10-footers, though forecasts had called for “prime fishing conditions,” the e-mail said. They started fishing when the committee boat called all lines in at 8 a.m. A 50-pound yellowfin tuna was trolled. After a little while, a white marlin jumped the spread and was hooked. The spread was cleared, and Capt. Rich backed down the boat, and the 69-inch white was placed in the fish box after 20 minutes. Seas worsened, and a couple of more whites entered the spread without biting. Lines out took place at 3 p.m. Back at the docks, Jersey Hooker was the only boat with a white marlin weighed in that day, jumping to the top of the leader board. On the next day, Saturday, the crew released one white, raised a couple and landed a good-sized, gaffer mahi mahi. Three whites were boated in the tournament that final day of the event, and the only one that qualified bumped Jersey Hooker out of first place.

Joe Piscetta and five buddies jumped aboard the boat for a 4-hour Vacation Special Trip, bailing sea bass the whole time at sticky bottom in the ocean. They had to work for the legal-sized lumpheads, but boxed 30 large keepers, a porgy and a cocktail blue.

Saturday July 24 we had Dennis O'Connel and his 5 pals aboard for a day troll at the canyon. We had high expectations because Captain Brain on the Hard Ways had a great yellow fin bite on Friday. We steamed to the Hudson canyon in 4-7' seas with most of them in the 7' range.... we got to the spot and the water was dirty and cold... We trolled east in search of clean warm water.. found clean col-bolt blue water 25 miles north east of where we started trolling ... It was a very slow day and 3 for 4 on Mahi Mahi and 1 45# yellow fin tuna .
Great group of guys despite the conditions and lack of fish it was great to be out there...

5/23 pea soup no liveies, Hard to locate the bunker. It was little bumpy out for the crew so oped to troll so the boat didn't rock as much. Lines in off Deal Tony Maja #4's 5 minuets in the water hooked up with a double headers this continued till 8am limited out and had two sickies on the boat. Group kept 8 stripe...rs largest was #39 the rest were cookie cutter #25-30 The group wanted to call it a day.

5/17/2010 had a call from a couple regulars itching to get out for some striper action live lining or Jigging/plugging. I made a few phone calls put the trip together departed from the dock @ 5:45pm passed the fleet live lining off Spring Lake ended up off Long Branch Birds diving and Bass Blitzing. Fish ranged from 10-25 pounds. A few of the guys had a tough time jigging plugging so we jumped on the troll to get them hooked up on a couple fish we were limited out by 7:30 pm playing catch and release until dark. We kept a rough count of 25 bass released and also kept the legal limit.

Reeled them up and head to Spring Lake snagged 30-40 bunks headed south where they had good marks and some troll bite... Dropped 6 bunkers over 10 minuets later a few hook ups and a couple pop offs ran out of bunkers had five in the box. Got back on the troll Tony Maja # 4s on custom built Jersey Hooker Outfitters Bunker Spoon Rods.... Pulled 3 nice fish in 10 minuets trolled around a little longer and the charter said they had too much fish and they wanted to go home. 8 stripers 36-42" fish largest weighing in at 30 pounds and 3 blue fish

5/14/2010 afternoon trip with some regulars Mean Dean, Big -T, Tommy, Mr. Surf Rocket, Big Rich Wilkowski, Chris Joe and Miss Alaina R. J. Da Fish. Broke Inlet @ 5:45 pm. Steamed north of Manasquan Inlet Not much life. Marked some fish off Deal through the spoons in while I scoped out the area. Nothing headed up to the Rocks read fish and bait a little too thin to jig on so we broke out the Tony Maja # 4 white and The # 3 white on Custom Jersey Hooker Outfitters Bunker Spoon Rods . Five minuets into the rod with the #4 is screaming, couple minuets later double header fish on the #3 & #4 couple minuets later triple header fish on a stretch, #3 & #4 . I looked over to my starboard side to see a blitz going on. I gave the order pull the trolling gear up broke out the plugs and jigs non stop action for the next hour and a half by that time we had released a dozen keeper fish and boxed our boat limit of 16 fish. four of the fish were in the high 20's 40 + inch fish and the rest were cookie cutter 15 pounders 36". We had a couple sprinkles and beat the storm.... Awesome trip with great people.

Tuesday May 11th 2010 we had Mean Dean Holonics and his banking associates from Gene Stravinsky Advantage Financial Robbinsville, NJ aboard the Jersey Hooker. Breaking Manasquan Inlet by 7am we were at the fishing grounds by 7:40 am we had a quick shot and the fish on jigs producing a couple short stripers and a few keepers after searching for life and a couple dozen drops I discussed with the charter the fish were just to spread out to productively jig of them they decided to troll. We pulled out the Custom Jersey Hooker Bunker spoon rods and Tony Maja #4 bunker spoons chartreuse , white and multi colored, all produced well about every 1o minuets we were hooked up the bite on the spoons slowed down and we broke out the Sportfish Products shad rigs and the bite picked right back up. The charter ended up with their limit of stripers 15-30lb range. The guys From Advantage Financial were a blast and we hope to fish with them again.

Captain Rich had the pleasure of having Ken Jelnicki "Mr. Surf Rocket" aboard the "New" Jersey Hooker on 4/14/2010. The dynamic duo departed from the Canyon River Club Marina Point Pleasant Beach, New Jersey at 8am. Capt. Rich made a stop off Spring Lake lots of life but no fish. Capt. decided to head north found the fish off of long branch worked them for a couple hours with steady action of keeper ranging from 29"-32" . Rich and Ken took their limit of four stripers and were back at the dock by 12:30pm. Great day on the water.

March 19, 2010 - The Atlantic City Press today reported that New Jersey shark fishermen have gotten a reprieve from the federal government with news that the state will be given more time to conform to management measures. The decision means that New Jersey's shark season can commence as normal for those who specifically target mako, thresher and blue sharks, which is exceptional news for New Jersey's struggling recreational fishing industry.

Tuesday the 17th jumped on the boat late afternoon 2-2:30 with a pal of mine and pops I wanted to practice anchoring the new boat because I do not have much experience using a windlass and also how the boat will set up on anchor ...... It was a huge success I managed to land the boat rite on top of a sunken army tank ........ Now the blackfish bite was red hot my Pops took a nap and me and my buddy managed 20 blackfish to 8 pounds throwing 4 back .... We were just shy of our 3 man limit. For a last minuet trip I am very happy with the results.

Captain Rich headed to the Toms canyon on 8/15-8/16 with the Auto Dynamixs sportfishing team aboard the Jersey Hooker for an over night combo troll chunk charter, with amazing sea conditions and lack of bite while on the night chunk the crew started to troll @ 5 am half hour into the troll two nice gaffer mahi mahi with the largest weighing in at over 20 pounds. The day consisted of a nice spread of fish released 3 white marlin and boxed three 65 pound yellowfin tuna. The guys were excited and had plenty of meat to bring home....

Captain Rich and Captain George headed for the Toms canyon this past weekend. 8/14-8/15 with the Eric Scully charter of 6 aboard with excellent weather conditions and not much cooperation from the fish the charter put a nice 16 pound gaffer mahi mahi in the box , 60 pound yellowfin , 35 pound yellowfin and released a 60+ pound white marlin. The over night bite was non existent and very frustrating for the two captains, they were reading fish and bait all night long. Back on the troll at 5am where the wolf pack made a short but exciting visit , big eyes that were well into the 200lb class came cashing on their spreaded. All in all it was a great trip with great customers.

8pm Wednesday the 5th of August we had the Mike M. charter of five aboard for a day canyon troll. After looking over the SST charts I decided to run for the Toms canyon we took our time lots of floating debris out there this season, for our customers safety , I extended the day canyon trolls to 20-22 hours long to make up for the slower ride out at night. We had lines in @ 4:45 am found some nice temp breaks holding some bait but no fish trolled around for a couple hours and found the fish picked trough some cookie cutter 25-32" fish. We put 7 keeper yellows in the boat and added one yellow that was 60lb and a 10 pound mahi mahi and a 30 pound mahi mahi. Great group great trip.

We had to cancel our first 30 hour tuna chunk and troll trip for The 29th and 30th of July due to a nasty storm front that moved in. The phone has been ringing off the hook all week everyone has been hearing the reports. Weekend dates are almost filled for August. The Chunk bite has started with some yellowfins upto 70 pounds caught and swords fish are starting to show up. The troll bite remains steady with mahi mahi and white marlin mixing up the catch a few Blue marlins have been released.

5/31 Capt Rich had the Jersey Hooker out yesterday for a last minute charter. The Charter arrived late all hopes of getting in on the first light striper blitz was lost. Fished a couple bunker schools just north of Barnegat Inlet with few signs of life other than bunker. Capt Rich head out to the tires where the charter pulled a few short fluke, smooth dog fish, and short seabass. The Jersey hooker steamed for the GSN reef site with little to no wind at this point capt drifted the area hand full of short fluke, 20 keeper sea bass 30 short sea bass and couple of snapper blues not a bad day. The half day charter ended up being a full day.

Monday March, 23Rd 2009 the Winter Flounder Bite was on fire! Headed back to the dock with 19 Flounder and released a few shorts.

Tuesday March, 24Th 2009 the Winter Flounder Bite was off! The charter only managed four keeps! The water temp was 2 degrees cooler than the previous day.

It has been a very long winter so far for Jersey Hooker Charters. It is hard to imagine we have another month of this! We are all very excited for the 2009 season. The Jersey Hooker has been outfitted with 10 brand new Okuma Titus Gold 50W two speed reels, 6 custom stand up rods for offshore fishing , 8 shimano casting rod reel combos for inshore fishing, 10 new big game trolling lures and a set of Penn down riggers for inshore and offshore fishing.

We would like to take the time to give our customers some info that is not posted up on the website and some current events. Jersey Hooker Charters was founded in 2004 by Captain Rich Wilkowski. The Jersey Hooker set sail today 12/3/08 with the Jerry Colangelo charter of Neptune NJ. Jerry brought along his two buddies Rich and Tony. Arriving at the Garden State North Reef around 8am. Quickly Jerry landed a slob of a Tautog (BlackFish) that weighed in at 10 pounds , (Jerry said this was his biggest Tautog to date). Shortly after another slob weighing in at 8 pounds. The charter had steady action ending up with 12 BlackFish biggest weighing in at 10 pounds. Around 12:30 I told the charter we were gonna try another piece of the wreck the they made the call just to head in. I like to thank Jerry and his gang they were a great group of hardcore fishermen, I am looking forward to having them out again.

Thanksgiving Day Bite Pops And I

We had Thanksgiving Day open for a shared charter but no anglers booked a spot. Pops and I decided to try our luck on the Striped Bass fishing that has been red hot !!! All I can say is "The Jersey Hooker Two Guys Trolling Two Rods and A Mad Dog Striper Bite" we ended up releasing over 35 fish, kept a 30" and a 34" what a great day on the water we were back at the dock by 1pm. We would have had our limit on Stripers but we take only what our family can eat without freezing.

We had the Powerful Pete Charter aboard the Jersey Hooker for a back to back Striper charter Sunday November 23rd and Monday November 24th. We had none stop action with two rods screaming at once both days the catches were made up of Stripers and gator blues. We had to work real hard for the keepers Sunday only managed to put a 29" fish in the boat and released 30 + fish to 27". On Monday Mean Dean Holonics jump aboard the Powerful Pete Charter. Mean Dean is one of our regular customers he gave up on the party boat scene and loves fishing with first mate Bart Martinez and myself. Monday the 24th of November we put a 32" bass and a 35" bass in the cooler. The 35" fish was fat full of sand eels weighed close to 20 pounds. I will put pictures up soon. Gator blues were mixed in as well as releasing over 50+ striped bass in the 27" range. The fish were not stacked up as heavy as I would have liked, so we could get some top notch jigging in. While most boats were chasing the birds and jigging we circled around the fleet trolling. Boats were jigging seemed to have a hard time, I saw a few boats pull up spiny dogs on the jig another reason I didn't bother to set the charter up on the jig. Due to the weather forecast for Sunday and Pete living 6 hours away I decided to call it off. Well we missed out some darn good fishing. We depart at 6 am and return between 2 and 3 PM from Long Key Yacht Club 104 Main street Waretown NJ 08758. There are basic directions on the web site www.JerseyHookerCharters.com . Striper / Bluefish trips are a troll jig combination they are 8 hours I sail with a minimum of two anglers and max of six. The cost is $100 per person does not include tip for the mate. These are shared charter trips so I put groups of people together to fill the boat but I will sail with a minimum of two angler to keep the boat moving and stay on top of the bite at my discretion. New Jersey Striped Bass Charter Reports 11/9-11/10/08

Sunday the 9th of November we had Mean Dean out he is one of our regular customers. We fished off IBSP we lost count of the short striped bass after 45 managed one keeper not one our record breaking trips. We were thankful for all of the action! Mean Dean went home with a keep Striper 34" and a cooler full of mixed size Bluefish.

Monday the 10th we had the Todd Smith charter aboard the Jersey Hooker. We Fished off IBSP, lots of action on short striped bass. I lost count after 28 short fish not bad for a one man charter!! Todd ended up going home with a 28" and 30" Striped Bass and 10 Bluefish. Below is a picture of Todd's catch.

Well the weather has made it impossible to get offshore. I have yet to hear anything about canyon fishing for tuna in the past few days. I will not throw the towel in yet on the canyon tuna fishing for this year but as we get further into November the weather plays even a bigger part in it. First mate Bart and myself have managed to make it out a few times for stripers over the past two weeks it is starting to pick up no limit catches yet but steady action, every trip we have put a catch together. Captain Rich and mate Bart headed out Monday October 13th for a late after noon shake down to test the freshly rebuilt starboard engine. Capt. had heard reports of striper and bluefish action off of ISBSP. The Jersey Hooker hung a left out of Barnegat Inlet, five miles later the depth finder screen was lit up from top to bottom. The two man crew managed to land a 29" and 30" bass and release a couple shorts then bluefish blitz started. The bluefish ranged from 8 -12 pounds and were in a feeding frenzy pound for pound the bluefish is one of the toughest fighting fish.

The long fin tuna bite is red hot @ the canyons we are still trying too book trips for open dates. Jersey Hooker will sail until the fish leave our offshore canyons. We have a list of single and double anglers looking to get out on a 30 hour canyon tuna charter.

After hearing solid reports of excellent tuna fishing at the canyons, Captain Rich decided to make his birthday wish for fresh tuna to come true. Friday, July 11 at 11:30PM The Jersey Hooker set sail for the Toms Canyon. Aboard was Captain Rich and his girlfriend, Captain George Paley, First Mate Bart and his friend Mazzie, Big Rich Wilkowski and Mean Dean Holonics and his friend Mean Matt. After the 73 mile ride with excellent sea conditions, The Jersey Hooker arrived at the tip of the Toms Canyon with time to spare for first light. Captain George Paley ran the cockpit. He put an excellent spread together, and within ten minutes, four of the seven rods were screamin. It was an excellent bite all day. The crew went 9 for 16 on yellowfin ranging from 30 lbs. to 60 lbs. Captain Rich said this was some of the best early season yellowfin fishing he has seen in years.

The day did not start off well.

Captain Rich got a last minute phone call from first mate Bart, he was sick and could not make the trip. The original plans were to fish for shark. With out Bart on board and no replacement for him, The Jersey Hooker Headed out to catch some Striped Bass. Fishing on the Jersey Hooker was Mean Dean Holonics, Michael Wilkowski, Big Rich Wilkowski and Captain Rich Wilkowski. They broke the inlet @ 6:15 am to see miles and miles of bunker breaking water. There was one problem no Stripers under them. Capt decided to head the boat north and a little east the fog suddenly surrounded them they had about 150 yards of visibility and Stripers and bunker all around. With 4 guys on the boat the crew managed to boat 7 Stripers from 26 pounds to 41 1/2 pounds, by 10 am the Captain Rich and crew were on their way in.
